Innovation happens when you solve the unaddressed problem. During exploratory design for the Simplehuman Spray Bottle, we observed that paper towels and spray bottles were almost always used in tandem in the kitchen, yet stored apart. We saw a clear opportunity to define an entirely new product category, launching an independent track to design a unified solution in an unaddressed market.

Because the traditional paper towel holder market was saturated with minor feature iterations, we chose to bypass incremental design altogether. We shifted our focus from the object to the behavior, asking: How do we saturate a paper towel directly from the dispenser? By anchoring our criteria in the final behavioral outcome rather than a predetermined form, we opened the door for deep architectural and technical discovery.
